You will need a username and password for this demo wiki in order to try the StudentNotebook. Please feel free to register for an account of your own or use the following credentials; username: StudentNotebookDemo and password: sndemo

A screencast of the steps described below is available here.

Step-by-step guide to this demo:
  1. Download this zip file to your computer and extract it to your Desktop or a different location of your choosing on your computer. Inside you will find a file called StudentNotebookDemo.html. This is a StudentNotebook configured to work with this demo class wiki.
  2. Open the StudentNotebookDemo.html file. At this time you may receive some security warnings from your browser. Please do not be concerned. The StudentNotebook is a JavaScript based application and uses AJAX techniques and the browser wants to confirm that you want to allow this behavior.
  3. You will now be prompted for a username and password in order to connect to the demo class wiki and download the content.
  4. The first time you open a new StudentNotebook it is empty of any content so this process can take a little longer as you have to download all the content, whereas in the future you would only need to download the updates. The downloading of content happens automatically in the background and you will see a notification box in the top right hand corner when it is complete.
  5. Choose "Lectures" from the left hand menu in the Student Notebook, it is right at the bottom. You will now see a list of all lectures available in the notebook.
  6. Choose any lecture and you will see a list of slides in the lecture. Click on any slide to see it. Note the "next" and "previous" buttons to navigate within the lecture, which are not available with the class wiki.
  7. When looking at any slide, click the "edit notes" button. A notes editing fields opens up where you can write your own notes for that lecture. It is pre-filled with the content of the slide in case you want to make notes line by line. Go ahead and delete that text and write from scratch if you want to.
  8. Note that you cannot edit the original slide. This is to ensure that there is no confusion over what the course instructor actually said.
  9. You can use the "New Page" button in the menu to create new pages in your notebook with any content you choose.
  10. "Recent Changes" in the menu lets you easily see what is the newest content in your notebook, while "Manage" can be used amongst other things to get a complete listing of all content in the notebook. "Help" contains links to pages in the notebook with information related to problems that you may run into when using the notebook.
  11. Please note the big blue "save notebook" button in the left hand menu of the notebook. All the content that has been downloaded from the class wiki and any notes that you might have written in this session are still in memory and have not been saved to your student notebook. Clicking this button saves your notebook so that it will remember all new content and notes. If you are using Internet Explorer or Firefox, you will be prompted for permission to allow the notebook to save itself. Please allow this. If you are using Safari or Opera, you will need to follow some additional steps the first time you save a notebook on your computer. After that you will have the same experience as well.

Getting a notebook for your wiki
Each notebook is specific to a particular online Wikispaces wiki. A notebook generator has been set up here that will allow you to generate a notebook for use with any Wikispaces wiki. However, do note that at this time the notebook generated will be identical to the StudentNotebook used in this demo and customized for the workflow described in this blog post. Therefore certain features such as the ability to create new pages and later upload them to the online wiki and the ability to edit pages downloaded from the online wiki have been disabled. In the near future a more generic notebook template will be added so that you can generate notebooks with these abilities, allowing it to be used as a generalized offline version of Wikispaces wikis.
